Meadow Brook Writing Project annual conference set for Jan. 29

The Meadow Brook Writing Project (MBWP) is once again partnering with the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) to present a unique professional opportunity for teachers to enhance the writing abilities of their students. This year’s Side by Side Symposium is themed “Rough Water Ahead: Teaching Writing in Turbulent Times.” This collaborative conference will address many challenges that writing educators face in the 21st century classroom.
“This is a great opportunity for teachers of all levels to join in lively discussions pertinent to effective writing instruction,” said Laura Gabrion, conference coordinator and director of Professional Development for the MBWP. “Beyond this, teachers will discover hands-on techniques and activities that can be immediately incorporated into their curriculum.”
The symposium was first conducted in 2006 in an effort to bring together writing educators and facilitate the exchange of innovative and useful teaching strategies. This year marks the first meeting since 2008 and Gabrion believes that it will continue to advance its mission of promoting excellence in student writing.
“It is called a "Side by Side" symposium because it allows teachers to work with other teachers,” Gabrion explained. “We are able to build our best practices through collaboration and discussion, and while concepts in education may change, the need to work together never does.”
This year, participants will have the opportunity to take part in a series of breakout sessions, workshops and presentations. Among the topics to be discussed are writing within communities, writing with new media, writing workshops, creative writing and more.
The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the MISD Service Center, located in Clinton Township. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Additionally, teachers can obtain .5 State Board Continuing Education Units if they stay for the entire program.
The registration deadline is Monday, Jan. 24. To register, visit the MBWP website. For more information, call (248) 370-4151 or email mbwp@oakland.edu.
