Eleven Great Ways Campus Recreation Can Help You Get Your Year Started Right!
The new year and winter months are upon us! Don’t let the cold distract you from your goals. Campus Recreation has many SOLUTIONS for your New Year’s Resolutions. Here are ELEVEN great resources right at your fingertips for getting ’11 started right!
11. Get a Recreation Center membership. Memberships start at $30/month for OU employees. Payroll deduction options are available. One month, four month, and annual memberships can be purchased and provide access to a run/walk track; lap swimming, diving well, and spa; more than 35 weekly group exercise classes; a Fitness Center with more than 100 pieces of cardio, selectorized, and free weight equipment; multipurpose courts for basketball, volleyball, and badminton; Shape Up OU participation; and employee rates on personal training, mind/body fitness classes, and massage therapy.
10. Check us out on Preview Day. Mark Thursday, January 13 as THE day to try the Rec! Drop in between 5:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. to try all the facility and department has to offer…free group exercise classes, use the equipment, get a free fitness assessment, ask the personal trainer, play, run, swim, and more! Membership specials will also be available for Preview Day participants. Bring your friends and family! More information can be found online on the Campus Recreation website.
9. Shape Up OU! Get a Recreation Center membership and reap the benefits of this incentive-based program. Includes a fitness assessment and one-on-one mentor to help you stay motivated while getting your exercise program started, revived, or into motion! All benefits-eligible employees can participate. Register for winter January 3-14. If you participated in the fall you don’t need to re-register!
8. Have a BLAST getting/keeping your body in shape! Try our BLAST sessions to help you work on your resolutions. Session 1 begins January 10 and runs Mondays and Wednesdays 6:00-7:00 a.m. with an optional Friday session from 6:00-7:00 a.m. Sessions include 45 minutes of body blast circuits and 15 minutes of stretching. BLAST participants also get a fitness assessment. $60/session for Rec Center members.
7. REVIVE yourself! Try this FREE 4-session stress management class provided by HAP and hosted by Campus Recreation. REVIVE will teach you ways to reduce stress, enhance your health, and deal with life’s inevitable challenges. Learn to become more in control of yourself and your reactions to stress. Tuesdays 12:10-12:55 p.m. January 18, February 1, February 15, and March 1. Registration required on the Building A Better U website.
6. Jump into a Wellness Wednesday session. Six FREE sessions are on the calendar for winter! Play BINGO, figure out what your health numbers mean, set goals, learn tips and tricks for sustainability, learn how massage therapy can benefit your health, and collect information on the resources available to you on campus and in the community to help improve your life. Visit the Campus Recreation website for the descriptions of each session and for information on signing up.
5. Got Sole? 43 people got sole in the fall and joined our new Sole Power Walking Program! Help us get that number to 100 for the winter semester! Register on the Building A Better U website before January 17, get yourself a pedometer, and start walking! Online tracking and motivation will be provided by a wellness intern. Prizes to those making the biggest improvements! Program is free and does not require a Rec Center membership!
4. Train for your event with our NEW running clinic! It’s more fun to train with a group and groups help with motivation! $15 gets you started and includes a Pace test, running schedule, and group runs led by a Recreation Center staff member twice/week for the month of January. Optional $10 monthly cost thereafter for continued group runs, a schedule, and new 30-minute strength workout each month. Rec Center membership required.
3. Get your friends together and tri something new in ’11! The 2nd annual Indoor Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, March20 from 9:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. at the Rec Center. Rec Center members and non-members are encouraged to participate. Run or walk 15 minutes, swim or water walk for 10 minutes, and bike for 20 minutes. Individuals and teams welcome. All levels welcome- beginner to advanced. All participants get a t-shirt, medals awarded for the winners in various categories. Individuals $25/$40 members/non-members or teams $45/$60 members/non-members.
2. Make a splash in the pool! Lap swim, circle swim, or dive! Water fitness is a great non-weight-bearing exercise for all ages. Not comfortable in the water? Get a pool orientation or take private or buddy swim lessons and be ready to spend the summer by the outdoor pool or at the lake!
1. Let massage therapy be an ally in your personal wellness plan. Campus Recreation offers one-hour and ½ hour full body massages for both members and non-members. Add massage therapy as a resource in bettering your health. Appointment information is available online. Not comfortable with a one-on-one massage? Our therapist will come to you for seated chair massage in your office or other campus location! Call today for details on how to help your office manage stress and feel great!
