New year welcomes opportunities for a new career in health care

The Oakland University School of Nursing invites potential career changers to ring in 2011 with new opportunity in a growing and fulfilling field. The Riverview Institute of Oakland University is now accepting applications for the certified Patient Care Technician (PCT) program.

This 16-week program prepares students for an entry level position in the healthcare setting with starting salaries averaging $13 to $16 per hour. The program also provides training to work in phlebotomy and as an EKG technician.

In addition, students can become eligible to sit for the PCT National Certification Exam, as well as establish an educational foundation necessary to go on to become licensed practical nurses or registered nurses.

Jacqueline Glover, director of operations for the Riverview Institute of Oakland University, explains that current demand for PCTs is great.

"In the industry, PCTs have a 93 percent turnover rate because of a lack of training," she said. "PCT certification provides fundamental skills for patient care delivery in an expanded role, leading to better patient outcomes and greater job satisfaction."

Admission requirements for the PCT program include a criminal background check, health screening and a drug-free test. Monthly information sessions are offered on the first Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. at the Riverview Institute of Oakland University, located at 7733 E. Jefferson in Detroit.
