Dr. Virinder K. Moudgil is the senior vice president for Academic Affairs and provost of Oakland University. He joined the university in 1976 as an assistant professor of biological sciences. As the chief academic officer at the university, Dr. Moudgil has launched a number of academic and research initiatives to move the university forward.

1. How important is it to you to support faculty research?

It is my passion to support faculty research at Oakland University. Without the outstanding research that our faculty performs, we would not be the university of excellence that we are today.

2. In what ways has Oakland University changed since you first came here?

When I first arrived, nearly 35 years ago, I embraced this university for its potential. Years later, I am proud of the achievements that our faculty, students and staff have made to position Oakland University as the intellectual and cultural center and economic engine of our community.

3. When do your days typically begin and end?

I typically arrive at the university around 8 a.m. and conduct my normal day’s work until about 7 or 8 p.m. Then, I spend time in the lab where I am actively engaged with conducting research and assisting student researchers, until I leave for home around 9:30 p.m.

4. Where do you hope Oakland University will be in the next ten years?

I envision Oakland University to be a resource and source of pride in our community. By meeting the educational, economic, and cultural needs of our community, I hope we continue to make it an ideal place to work, live and raise a family.

5. What is the best part of your job?

To have the opportunity to serve and make a difference in the work and lives of our students, faculty and staff. To help students with research and assist them as they progress into a career and in their life is very gratifying.

As educators, it is our job to facilitate growth in students. Our students come with great intrinsic potential, and we can provide experiences to assist them in achieving their goals. We can offer opportunities for students to excel, to provide supportive platforms for them to reach their potential.
