Maintain, Don't Gain encourages healthy eating during the holidays

By Melissa Sochaki, student writer

The fall and winter holidays offer a wide variety of special food, drinks and desserts. It can be difficult to diet or maintain a healthy weight through the festive season.

Oakland University's Maintain, Don’t Gain (During the Holidays) presentation is focused on helping people making better food selections during Thanksgiving, Christmas and through New Year's Eve. The session will be held at  6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Recreation and Athletics Center on campus.

This presentation will offer suggestions on how to make healthier choices when it comes to holiday food, and also provide tips for staying active in order to lose or maintain weight over the season where many people overeat.

Rachelle Pascua Winkler, fitness programs and service coordinator, will present the program and said that she hopes to educate students on healthy lifestyles during this time of year and show them beneficial ways to exercise.

According to a study done by the Nutrition Journal, average sized people gain an average of one pound over the holidays. Overweight and obese people tend to gain an average of two pounds, while healthier individuals averaged only one half of a pound.
