This past summer, Oakland University’s School of Education and Human Services welcomed a new dean into its fold. A special reception was held to introduce Louis Bertrand Gallien, Jr., Ed.D. to the university community in late September.
The SEHS has long been privileged with strong leadership, and Dr. Gallien is no exception, according to Mary Stein, Ph.D., professor of science education and chair of the school’s dean search committee.
“We could not be more pleased to have Dr. Gallien as our new dean, “ she says. “In addition to Dr. Gallien’s strong academic and leadership credentials, our faculty, staff and other stakeholders were very impressed with his inspiring passion and vision for the school. His commitment to education and service is very closely aligned with the school’s passion statement, ‘Making a difference in people’s lives by creating opportunities for them to succeed.’ Dr. Gallien clearly will move us forward as a school, and we are truly looking forward to a bright future ahead.”
At OU, Dr. Gallien says his goals include seeing the university expand its prominence beyond the state lines.
“There is such a broad vision for the university as a whole,” he says. “There are so many positive things happening here. Oakland is primed to draw new students and recognition from the national arena. I am very excited about Oakland’s future.”
As an educator, Dr. Gallien’s primary research focus has been on multiculturalism and pluralism with special reference to African American pedagogy, culture and history.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gallien has been awarded numerous grants to research higher education on a global level. He has earned several awards for his teaching, research and service, and has been recognized for his commitment to fostering diversity in all levels of education.
As a scholar, Dr. Gallien has published and presented his findings extensively and has authored three books and more than 40 reviews in print. He was also named Regent University’s Chancellor’s Faculty Member of the Year in 2006.
“Overall, I see my new role as dean to be one of an effective storyteller,” Dr. Gallien says. “Telling the stories of the outstanding programs and work of students and professors on the cusp of national attention is certainly worthwhile.”
A Detroit native, Dr. Gallien returns to Michigan from the Regent University Graduate School of Education in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he served as Distinguished Professor of Education and program chair of the Department of Higher Education Leadership.
He has also taught urban education at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and was an adjunct professor at Emory University, also in Atlanta. In addition, he has been a visiting scholar at Oxford-Brookes University in Oxford, England.
Dr. Gallien received his Bachelor of Science in Government and History degree from Taylor University. He earned his Master of Arts in History and Doctor of Education in Educational Policy, Administration and Research degrees from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro.
