Writing and rhetoric professor helps students build composition skills

Dr. Alice Horning has taught a variety of writing courses at OU since 1982.
Alice S. Horning, Ph.D., is a professor of writing and rhetoric and linguistics at Oakland University. Throughout her career, she has written and co-edited several books and articles on the psycholinguistics of literacy. Much of Dr. Horning’s work is devoted to helping college students strengthen their reading and writing skills.

Since 2007, Dr. Horning has been the Arts and Humanities Associate Editor for the Michigan Academician, the quarterly journal of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters. Since 2009, she has served as managing editor of WPA: Writing Program Administration, the journal of the Council of Writing Program Administrators. The CWPA is the national organization for teachers and scholars who direct writing programs at colleges and universities in the US, Canada and other countries.

An Oakland faculty member since 1982, Dr. Horning teaches a variety of courses in the Department of Writing and Rhetoric, including classes in developmental, introductory, intermediate and advanced composition. In the Department of Linguistics, Dr. Horning teaches Introductory Linguistics, Language Development in Children, Linguistics and Reading, Psycholinguistics, Teaching English as a Second Language and several courses in the Honors College.

Dr. Horning served as director of Oakland’s Rhetoric Program from 1998-2008. She holds a Ph.D. in English from Michigan State University.
