Eight exceptional Oakland University students received recognition as recipients of Oakland University-Macomb and Oakland University Pawley Lean Institute scholarships at a reception at Villa Penna Banquets in Sterling Heights, Mich.

The recipients and guests were treated to dinner and dessert Wednesday, Sept. 29, in appreciation of the students’ scholarship and achievement.

Pamela Kellet, assistant vice president of Outreach at Oakland University, and Julianne Leigh, director of budget and the Pawley Institute, presented attendees with a commemorative certificate and gift during the reception.

The Pawley Institute distinguished two student leaders, Cassie Bell and Matt Szczesiul, with the Dennis and Carlotta Pawley Endowed Undergraduate Student Lean Award for their experience and knowledge in Lean thinking.

Bell, a senior majoring in human resource development, and Szczesiul, a senior in the Bachelor of Integrated Studies program with a focus on Lean entrepreneurship, believe that Lean is an important concept in the future of the economy and have experience implementing Lean.

“I was surprised and honored to receive this award,” Szczesiul said.

Oakland University-Macomb honored both outstanding graduate and undergraduate students. Shawn Frezza and Chelsea Doyle received the OU-Macomb Graduate Scholarship and Karley Comeau and Jaclyn Schmitt, the Undergraduate Scholarship.

Britney Monfette and Taylor Ottman were recognized as high-achieving concurrent-enrollment Macomb2Oakland (M2O) students with the M2O Scholarship.

Of the recipients, Szczesiul, Frezza, Comeau and Ottman attended the reception.

Frezza is a graduate student in the Master of Education in Special Education with Autism Spectrum Disorder Endorsement program at the Macomb Intermediate School District. Comeau, a senior, is an elementary education major with social studies and language arts endorsements.

Ottman, a freshman, is currently taking classes at both Macomb Community College and Oakland University as part of the M2O program.
