Dr. Russi honored with Quality People, Quality County award

By Katie Land, news editor

Oakland County Executive L. Brook Patterson has recognized the vision and achievements of Oakland University President Dr. Gary Russi as part of the 18th Annual Quality People, Quality County Awards Breakfast.

Dr. Russi and Dr. Ken Matzick, recently retired CEO of Beaumont Hospitals, received accolades for bringing plans for the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine to fruition.

“I can sum up Dr. Russi’s many contributions in one word: visionary,” said Patterson. “The award we presented to Dr. Russi this morning underscores his leadership that benefits OU and Oakland County so well.”

Dr. Russi also received a Quality People, Quality County award in 2008.

The medical school will open its doors to the first class in 2011, and promises to have a positive impact on both the need for doctors and the struggling economy in Oakland County.

Administrators anticipate an estimated 11,000 new jobs and $1 billion in new investments to flood into the area as a result of the school.

Also recognized as community leaders during the awards breakfast were Albert Scaglione, president and owner of Park West Gallery in Southfield, and Ron Kagan, executive director and CEO of the Detroit Zoological Society. The breakfast took place on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Centerpointe Marriott.
