Oakland University has a great Academic Skills Center that offers you an assortment of programs and assistance to help you succeed in college. Macomb Community College has a wonderful Learning Center that offers many different options to support student's academic success. In order to learn more about these centers, I asked the experts to describe the services. Here is what they had to say.
"College is a time for new adventures and challenges! The adventure begins when you walk onto the college campus and into the classroom where your mind is expanded with new found knowledge and wonder. It is a time to enhance your skills from analytical writing and critical thinking to managing time and learning to live with a roommate.
Let the Academic Skills Center (ASC) assist you in the critical thinking arena! The ASC offers a variety of services and programs to help students become independent learners and achieve their best academically. Services available at the ASC include the following: walk-in and appointment tutoring, Supplemental Instruction (SI), self-paced instructional materials, undergraduate readmissions, and much more.
All services and support programs are available at no additional cost (it's FREE folks!) to currently enrolled OU students. Visit the ASC at its main office located at 103 North Foundation Hall, or its satellite location at 117 East Vandenberg Hall. Make the ASC part of your adventure today! "-Krista Malley, Director of Academic Skills Center at Oakland University
"Macomb's Learning Centers, located at South Campus in Warren and Center Campus in Clinton Township, provide a wide range of academic support resources for students. Tutoring is one of the most popular services and is course specific, with sessions available at both campuses. Information on tutoring schedules, incuding location, are available on Macomb's website.
The Learning Centers host a series of Student Success Seminars to help students learn strategies to enhance their academic success. There are 11 different topics addressed, ranging from time management, note taking, test taking, and papers, presentations and projects. Students credit the skills learned in these seminars for having a direct, positvie impact on their grades.
Many additional resources are available through the Learning Centers, including reference books, microscopes, plant and body models, study guides, software to enhance skills, as well as JAWS and Kurzweil 3000 for students with disabilities. Students can also take make-up tests at the Learning Centers, with the approval of thier insturctors.
For more information, contact the South Campus Learning Center (J325) at 586.445.7400 or the Center Campus Learning Center (C116) at 586.286.2203."
