OU's counseling programs receive national re-accreditation

Oakland University’s counseling programs received a ringing endorsement recently, when its course offerings were given full re-accreditation by a national review board.

The accreditation was made by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) board of directors last July.

Dr. Lisa Hawley, chair of the Department of Counseling, says the counseling curriculum met all of the 282 standards set by CACREP, and that the accreditation is good for eight years.

“This was the first time our doctoral and master’s programs went for review together, so we have them both re-accredited,” she said.

In addition, the board offered a special commendation to the OU team, comprised of faculty and students, in conducting the two-year self-study, which it called a “worthy achievement,” in its confirmation letter to OU President Dr. Gary Russi.

“It’s quite an accomplishment to gain full accreditation for an eight-year period, and it speaks well of the teamwork that was required to achieve a successful accreditation,” said Dr. Hawley.
