Welcome Week festivities include events, shows and more

The Oakland University community will usher in another exciting year with the fun-filled extravaganza popularly known as Welcome Week.

The festivities begin on Wednesday, Sept. 1, with Jump Start hosted by the Center for Student Activities from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day also includes a Campus Text Scavenger Hunt starting at noon at the Oakland Center Information Desk. Additionally, Athletics will host the Grizz Gang Jumpin’ Jamboree from 5-8 p.m. in the Hamlin Courtyard.

Thursday, Sept. 2, will mark the launch of the much-anticipated Bear Bus Shuttle Service from 11:30 a.m.to 1 p.m., outdoors between North and South Foundation Halls. The day also features an Ice Cream Social sponsored by Student Affairs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. outdoors between North and South Foundation Hall. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Pioneer Food Court inside the Oakland Center.

Also, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, University Relations will host a Community Business Fair outdoors between North and South Foundation Halls. Nearly 60 area businesses will attend to display product and service features as well as provide valuable discounts and coupons for the OU community.

The Department of Music Theatre and Dance along with the student group, Actors ‘N’ Techies, will present “Young Man’s Blues: A Rock Musical Inspired by Elton John.” The production will run from Friday, Sept. 3, through Sunday, Sept. 5, with nightly performances at 8 p.m. in Varner Studio Theatre, located in Varner Hall.

Following Labor Day recess, the Center for Student Activities and Student Technology Center will hold an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 7, from noon to 1 p.m. on the lower level of the Oakland Center in Room 49. Later that day, the Oakland University Student Congress will host its second annual Rock4Rights from 7-10 p.m. in the Pioneer Food Court.

University Relations will host a Mini-Challenge for the Amazing Michigan Race to benefit Special Olympics Michigan from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, in the Oakland Center Fireside Lounge. Later that day, Veteran Services will hold a welcome reception from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge.

Students can explore the many ways to get involved on campus at the Student Organizations Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Greek Organizations Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, outdoors around the Oakland Center. The 9th annual Campus Recreation vs. University Housing Tailgate Party from 6-8 p.m. will be followed by a Flag Football Challenge from 8-9:30 p.m. in the Upper Fields.

Festivities will conclude Friday, Sept. 10, with the Sigma Pi Fraternity 16th annual pig roast scheduled from 7 p.m. – midnight. Additionally, the Student Program Board will host a Comedy Show with actor-comedian Charlie Murphy from 9-11 p.m. in the O’rena.

As part of Welcome Week 2010, Oakland University’s Athletics Department is partnering with the newly opened Meijer store on Adams Road and M-59 to host the “Meijer Mania” event from 9 p.m. - midnight on Tuesday, Aug. 31.

All OU students are welcome to come and enjoy an evening of free food, entertainment and giveaways, including store coupons, gift cards and a chance to win a $5,000 shopping spree. Free shuttle bus service will be provided, starting at 8:30 p.m. in Hamlin Circle. Come and join the OU cheer and dance teams, along with the beloved mascot “Grizz” at this fun-filled event.
