The OU Pawley Lean Institute to move into Macomb-OU INCubator
The Oakland University Pawley Lean Institute (PLI) is moving to a new location at the Macomb-OU INCubator North in Sterling Heights, Mich.
With high hopes of bringing the benefits of Lean to even more community members and local businesses, the Institute will set up shop amongst new and growing businesses at the INCubator, located in the Technology Advancement SmartZone of Sterling Heights, in mid September. Full Story...

Careers in Lean allows students to network with Lean professionals
Careers
in Lean and Continuous Improvement, a student networking event hosted
by the Oakland University Pawley Lean Institute and the Lean Learning
Cooperative (LLC) student group, will be held Oct. 11 from 5-7 p.m. in
the Gold Rooms of the Oakland Center, located on Oakland University's
campus.
Also sponsored by OU Career Services, this event will provide an opportunity for students to network with professionals in Lean, process excellence, and quality and continuous improvement. Full Story...

Lean Thinking for Schools helps Texas administrators learn Lean tools
The Oakland University Pawley Lean Institute, in conjunction with the Temple Independent School District (ISD), held a two day Lean Thinking for Schools seminar at the Temple ISD in Temple, Texas.
Led by Dr. Shannon Flumerfelt, assistant professor of educational leadership at Oakland University, the seminar provided an overview of Lean principles and their applications to education. Problems with the Commons? Use Lean to Solve Them
On June 2, 2010, the results of the Common Core State Standards for English, language arts and mathematics, as well as history, social studies, science and technical subjects were unveiled with the goal of preparing students for careers and college against international benchmarks.
This state-led initiative was coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers and required involvement by many organizations and educational stakeholders. The standards do not tell teachers how to teach, but do include, for
example, instructional delivery system design based on interdisciplinary
responsibility for literacy and media and assessment/evaluation
approaches conducive to differentiation by developmental needs of
students.
Each subject/competency area in the standards has a unique
approach to content progression as well as scope and sequence, varying
from increasing levels of content mastery to thematic arrangements to
spiraled curricula. Full Story...

The Pawley Lean Institute is offering the following courses in fall 2010:
Undergraduate Class
HRD 304: Lean Principles and Practices in Organizations
This activity-based introduction to the principles and practices in HRD explores innovative ways to solve problems confronting organizations today. The course includes hands-on simulations, guest speakers and on-site tours.
Honors College Class
HC 207: Lean Thinking
Offered exclusively to Honors College students, this course teaches Lean theory, rules, principles, concepts and tools as well as key HRD policies and practices. Students will take part in a kaizen team Lean workout of a dysfunctional process.
