Run for Autism raises $32,000 for OUCARES and Homes for Autism
More than 600 people turned out in support of a good cause at the second annual Run for Autism held Sunday, May 16 on Oakland University’s campus. The event featured both a 10k race and a 5k walk, drawing many participants from the surrounding community, including families impacted by autism.
The roughly $32,000 raised from the event will be donated to the Oakland University Center for Autism Research, Education and Support (OUCARES) and Homes for Autism, an organization that provides housing and support services to adults with autistic challenges.
This year’s event saw an increase in sponsors, as well as enhanced opportunities to raise awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders in the community, according to Angie Schmucker, director of development in Oakland’s School of Education and Human Services.
Schmucker said that since its inception, the race has had a remarkable impact on raising autism awareness and support. In 2009, the first year of the race, OUCARES saw its total number of gifts quadruple from the previous year.
