The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine Receives NCA Accreditation!
Oakland University
William Beaumont School of Medicine now accepting student applications
Rochester, Mich. – Michigan's newest medical school – the Oakland
University William Beaumont School of Medicine – is now accepting
applications for student admissions.
Admissions opened for
the school's first class of 50 students after the Higher Learning
Commission of the North Central Association, which accredits
degree-granting institutions in 19 states, approved Oakland University's
request to issue medical degrees.
NCA representatives
visited the medical school in January and recommended approval to NCA
administrators in mid-April. The Liaison Committee for Medical
Education, the accrediting authority for medical education programs in
the U.S. and Canada, granted preliminary accreditation to the school in
February.
"We can now move forward with our plans to recruit
the best and brightest applicants for our inaugural class, which will
begin instruction in August 2011," said Robert Folberg, M.D, founding
dean of the medical school. "We are gratified that the NCA has given our
school an extremely positive evaluation, recognizing our efforts over
the past two years to create an extraordinary medical education
experience for students."
The new medical school has
attracted distinguished physicians, educators and administrators from
across the country to Southeastern Michigan.
Students will
receive instruction in basic sciences and research methods on Oakland
University's campus in Rochester. Clinical training and applied research
will take place in their third and fourth year of instruction at the
Beaumont Hospitals in Royal Oak, Troy and Grosse Pointe. There, students
will benefit from the expertise of a teaching hospital system with more
than 90 medical specialties and 38 accredited, post-graduate residency
and fellowship programs.
"Our involvement in the new medical
school will help attract even more medical talent to Beaumont and to
the region – benefiting our patients and the communities we serve," said
Ananias Diokno, M.D., chief medical officer, Beaumont Hospitals. "And
it will help to ensure that as our population ages, there will be an
adequate supply of physicians to care for Michigan residents."
"This is the start of an exciting, new era for Oakland University,
Beaumont Hospitals, Oakland County and Southeastern Michigan," said
Virinder Moudgil, Oakland University's senior vice president for
academic affairs and provost. "We expect the school to have an immensely
positive impact on the local economy, reputation and quality of life in
this area."
Operation of the privately funded school will
be supported with revenue from tuition, partner contributions, research
grants and philanthropy.
