CIBRE Education -- Scholars Program Update

The SBA Scholars program is a unique undergraduate program offered through the SBA's Center for Integrated Business Research and Education (CIBRE). Special projects give Scholars insight and experience with both established solid businesses as well as cutting-edge technology-driven companies.

The Scholars Program is a competitive, academic program which requires students to apply and interview before they are selected. In the program, students experience unique opportunities. They are recognized for academic achievement and, through networking and community involvement, they become a very cohesive and productive group. 

Scholar's projects for 2009-10 include:
• Working with the Accounting Aid Society, doing taxes for senior citizens
• Creating a Facebook page for Crittenton Hospital Medical Center
• Helping identify local organizations that can be reached by the Salvation Army
• Starting an investing club in the SBA to provide members with opportunity to invest in stocks with donated funds. The goal is to become bigger than the Harvard Endowment Fund!

In the Global Scholars program:
• A group of students traveled to universities in Beijing and Shanghai worked with Chinese counterparts on projects involving international marketing of automobiles last spring. (Read story for more info)
• This summer, 11 undergraduate students will visit Beijing Jaitong University for a similar experience.

Bi-monthly Scholars meetings provide leadership development training and noted business professionals also present topics relevant to the times. Speakers this year have included:
• Rande Somma, past president, Johnson Controls, who spoke about ethics in business
• Col. Norman Marshall of the Salvation Army who talked about the role of non-profits
• Paul Chapman, Cargo Solutions Group, on entrepreneurial opportunities
• Carl Camden, CEO, Kelly Services, on management

By working closely with the SBA's Executives-In-Residence (EIR), business executives who donate their time as advisers and mentors, a robust ongoing dialogue takes place. There are also opportunities for Scholars to meet one-on-one with professionals to gain insight in their chosen field.
