Carmen Etienne wins outstanding academic adviser award

Carmen Etienne, an adviser with the School of Engineering and Computer Science, is the recipient of Oakland University’s 2009 Outstanding Professional Academic Adviser Award.

Sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the award recognizes extraordinary mentoring relationships, development of strong leadership skills, contributions to creating new programs and high student satisfaction.

“There are a lot of excellent advisers on campus, and I admire them quite a bit,” said Etienne. “Just to be nominated was very exciting. Winning the award was overwhelming.”

The award was announced by a selection committee following nominations from students and examination of supporting materials, said Sandra Deng, co-chair of the Advising Recognition Committee. Etienne was chosen from among 13 advisers nominated for the award. The selection committee included the dean of students, senior associate provost, faculty representatives from each of OU’s colleges and schools, and the current student body president.

“Many of the people on the selection committee don’t know me personally, so it’s an honor to have them look at what I’ve done and select me for this award,” said Etienne.

Etienne joined the university in 1995, and has been an adviser for SECS since 2003. She and one other adviser are responsible for advising about 800 students.

“Our students are often high achievers, and their majors are rigorous. Academic advising is essential for our students to stay on track in their programs,” Etienne said.

She will receive an honorary plaque and a $1,000 stipend for the award. She is also eligible for consideration for a statewide advising award from the Michigan Academic Advising Association.

A reception to celebrate Etienne’s accomplishment will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Monday, March 29 in Oakland Center Gold Room B.
