Apply by March 15 to study abroad in Israel this summer
An exotic and unique educational opportunity is available this summer for Oakland University students interested in traveling to the central Galilee region of Israel. The four-week, study abroad program offers Oakland credit and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Applications are being accepted now through Monday, March 15, for the Oakland Academic Summer Israel Study, set for July 5 through Aug. 5.
Through Oakland’s partnership with the Max Stern Academic College of Emek Yezreel, participants will help teach sixth-grade Israeli students in an English language summer camp located in the Jezreel Valley.
Participating students will live with a host family and travel on excursions to sites such as Jerusalem’s Old City, Tel Aviv, Masada, the Dead Sea, Yad Vashem, Caesarea and Tiberias.
All participating students will take the four-credit course IS 300 – Special Topics: Israel and the Middle East – a course that surveys the history of modern Israel and evaluates its place in Middle East society and culture. Students may also take IS 390 – Directed Readings in International Studies for two or four credits, or register for an independent study in the student’s major department.
Costs for the program range from $4,000-5,500, depending on the number of credits taken. The price includes tuition, round trip airfare from Detroit, room and board, in-country travel, sightseeing expenses and a $250 nonrefundable application fee that is applied to the program cost. Scholarships may also be available.
