OU workshop offers strategies to assess threats and manage risk of workplace violence

Oakland University’s School of Education and Human Services (SEHS) is pleased to present “Assessing and Managing Workplace Violence (WVP) Threats,” a two-day seminar designed to increase awareness and promote risk-reducing strategies. The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays, March 6 and 13.

Critical topics to be addressed include types of threats, levels of violence, warning signs and associated behaviors, retaliation, domestic violence spillover and the psychological consequences of a traumatic event. The impact of organizational policies and procedures during hiring, terminating and downsizing also will be addressed. As part of the workshop, participants will develop threat management and safety plans for various situations.

Leading the course will be Judy Jacobs, Ph.D., RN, co-author of “The Workplace Violence in Healthcare Tool Kit: A Guide to Establishing Prevention and Training Program.” Jacobs also is president of Professional Health Care Systems, a national consulting and training firm with expertise in WPV risk and threat management, regulatory compliance and educational programming. She has conducted seminars nationally and has served on the boards of the National Victim Advocacy Center in Fort Worth, Texas, and the National Organization for Victim Assistance in Washington, D.C.

Early registration for the workshop, available through Tuesday, Feb. 23, is $99. Standard registration is $119 and must be submitted by March 1. Additional information and a registration form are available online at oakland.edu/wpv. Those interested in further information also can call (248) 370-3033 or e-mail to pdfirst@oakland.edu to enroll.
