OU summer courses offer great opportunities for guest students

By Eric Reikowski, staff writer

College students spending their summer in the Metro Detroit area can keep moving toward graduation by enrolling as a guest student at Oakland University. A wide variety of courses offer not only convenience and affordability, but the ability to transfer credits to one’s home institution.

Those interested in this opportunity should check the Michigan Transfer Network to learn which courses will transfer. Registration for undergraduate and graduate students opens on Friday, Feb. 19.

The regular summer semester starts Monday, May 3. However, a special summer session planned for May 10-June 30 is available to students who cannot start the regular semester on time. Guest students will pay upper-level tuition.

“Research shows that guest students are looking for quality and convenience when they consider which institution to attend in the summer,” said Dr. Michelle Piskulich, associate professor of political science and associate provost for Academic Affairs.

“OU is a great choice because we have outstanding faculty who have a strong commitment both to teaching and research. Most of our classes are available on the main campus accessible off of I-75, but students will also find courses offered at sites throughout metro Detroit and especially in Macomb County.”

To attend Oakland as a guest student, individuals must be enrolled and in good standing at an accredited college or university. Prospective undergraduate guest students should complete the following steps:
Prospective graduate guest students enrolled at a participating Michigan institution should download a Michigan Intercollegiate Graduate Studies (MIGS) program guide and complete the MIGS application form. Students who are not enrolled at a participating Michigan institution must apply as regular guest students using the Application for Graduate Admission. Students should consult advisers at their home institutions regarding the ability to transfer specific credits to their programs.

Guest students receive all advising from their home institution and are responsible for requesting that a transcript of grades be sent to their home institution after courses are completed. Oakland University charges no transcript fees.

Guest status is valid for one semester only. If a student wishes to attend more than one semester, a Guest Application must be filed for each semester to be attended. Enrollment for all guest students is limited to 12 credit hours.
