The Elsa and Ingrid Scholarship for Young Authors and Artists

by Cornelia Pokrzywa

Siblings of children battling life-threatening illnesses live in challenging circumstances that include great emotional and financial demands on the entire family. In an effort to provide an inspiring, creative opportunity without additional financial demands on their families, the Meadow Brook Writing Project will offer a scholarship that covers full tuition for one child to attend the Young Writers Camp in any of the 2010 sessions. The Elsa & Ingrid Scholarship for Young Authors and Artists will be offered to a child whose sibling is fighting a life-threatening illness. The scholarship is dedicated to the memory of the special relationship between two sisters, Elsa and Ingrid Koran. They spent many hours on their favorite activity, writing and illustrating imaginative stories together. Ingrid passed away in 2009 at the age of 7 after battling childhood cancer for 2 years.

The scholarship is designed to be flexible in order to accommodate the challenging circumstances of families with a critically ill child. The scholarship winner can choose to attend whichever Young Writers Camp session suits the family’s needs. Sessions run throughout June and July.

To apply for the scholarship, please submit the name of the child, parent/guardian, contact information, and a brief description of family circumstances (see below). The award is based on a statement of family circumstances and the nominated child’s desire to attend the camp. Nominations will be accepted beginning in April 2010 until a winner is announced before the camp sessions begin.

The scholarship is privately funded by donations. If you know of a child who might wish to apply for the scholarship, or if you would like to contribute to the fund or sponsor a scholarship, please contact (Marshall Kitchens at kitchens@oakland.edu).
