Make Plans to Attend Our Annual Side by Side Symposium

By Laura Gabrion

The Side by Side Symposium, the brainchild of our own Kathleen Reddy-Butkovich, will be held this year on Saturday, May 8 at the Macomb Intermediate School District.  Historically, the symposium has created an opportunity for teachers to share teaching ideas and strategies, working side by side with other teachers, K-University.  This year will be no different.

For the first time, the Meadow Brook Writing Project has partnered with the Macomb Intermediate School District to bring forth an all-encompassing and exciting conference for teachers of writing at all academic levels

The theme for the symposium is “Moving Writing Forward: Practice, Assessment, and Play.”  The sessions will invite teachers to dialogue about the critical roles they have as they encourage their students to write, collaborate, publish, and perform in the 21st century classrooms across grade levels and across the curriculum.

Teachers will work with fellow teachers in an effort to share best practices, to gain new perspectives, and to consider new approaches to writing pedagogy.  As the definition of literacy continues to evolve, this conference will provide important resources and strategies that will foster student engagement and enhance assessment. The cost for the conference is inexpensive:  $35 for part-time or pre-service teachers, $50 for full-time teachers, and free for presenters (lunch is included for all).

The MISD is conveniently located at 44001 Garfield Road in Clinton Township so come and spend the day exploring ideas—learn how to move writing forward in your own classroom!
