OU music students honored by Tuesday Musicale

Joseph WaltersGrace Lupas Two Oakland University students are among the outstanding area music students selected for the Tuesday Musicale of Greater Pontiac scholarship awards. The top prize winners will be presented in concert Tuesday, March 9, 2010, 7:30 p.m.

Joseph Walters is a 22-year-old pianist studying at Oakland University whose parents are Mr. & Mrs. James Walters.  He graduated from Berkley H.S. in 2006, and is a sophomore piano performance major, studying under the guidance of Dr. Rebecca Happel.  Mr. Walters is the first place recipient of the $2000 Rosamond P. Haeberle Piano Award.

Grace Lupas, a 23-year-old pianist, also studies with Dr. Rebecca Happel at Oakland University, and is the daughter of Petru and Cornelia Lupas of Troy. She graduated from Athens High School in 2004 and is completing a Bachelor of Music Degree in music education at Oakland University.  She is the second place recipient of the Rosamond P. Haeberle $1000 Piano Award.  She will use the award to study toward a Master’s Degree.

Adjudicators for the Rosamond P. Haeberle Piano Scholarship were Dr. Robert Conway of the Music Department of Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan and Dr. Robert Satterlee of the Music Department of Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio.  As artists of international repute, they are familiar with many rising artists and composers of piano music.  Dr. Conway and Dr. Satterlee possess encyclopedic knowledge of musical foundation training to achieve technical and stylistic goals.

Members of Tuesday Musicale also participated in the auditions:  Helen Schmitz, Mary Ann LaMonte, President, Susan Schoonover, Vice President, Margaret Van Hull, Judith Wade, Margaret Warczak, Sally Welch, Martha Windcheif.  The auditions were organized by June Harting.

The public is invited to hear the 5 top prize winners in concert Tuesday, March 9, 2010, 7:30 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Waterford, 3882 Highland Rd., Waterfor.  There will be a free-will offering at the concert.
