Celebrate OU's winter welcome week Jan. 5-9

The OU community is ringing in the new decade and semester with a winter welcome week filled with an interesting variety of campus activities and events. The celebration kicks off today and features a number of opportunities for students and staff to get back in the grizzly spirit.

The Oakland Center Administration and Reservations will be offering free gaming through Friday, Jan. 8 from noon-1 p.m. in Bumpers Game Room, which is located on the lower level of the Oakland Center.

Additionally, Campus Recreation will be hosting a free preview day from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7, in the Rec Center. OU students, staff and alumni are invited to bring their friends and families to experience a wide range of facility services, including sport massages, group exercise classes, yoga, cycling demonstrations, sports activities and more. Several promotions will be offered that day, including a $30 discount on a new 12-month membership.

Also that day, the Center for Student Activities will be sponsoring “Get Involved Day!” through the Student and Greek Organizations Fair.  It will be held from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. in the Main Hallway and Fireside Lounge of the Oakland Center.

A number of fun-filled performances will take place during the week, including “Friday Night Live,” featuring comedian Johnny Cardinale. Sponsored by Residence Halls Programming, the event will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms to be followed by another round of live entertainment. Sponsored by the Student Program Board, renowned hypnotist Tom DeLuca will present “The Hippest Hypnosis Show” starting at 9 p.m. in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms. The night will conclude with “The Electric Glow” dance party from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Oakland Center Gold Rooms.

The week will wrap up with a “Meet Me in the OC” extravaganza from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9. Festivities will include the OC Mini-Club, OC Film Festival, dance lessons, psychic readings and speed dating OU-style. The OC Film Festival will offer two viewings each of the films "The Hangover," "The Ugly Truth," and "Paranormal Activity."
