OU program helps two mathematics students excel in national competition
Rochester, Mich. – Two gifted high school students who participated in Oakland University’s Summer Mathematics Institute recently garnered national recognition for their skills.
The students, Randy Jia and David Lu, travelled to New York with OU math professor and mathematics institute director Eddie Cheng to present research at the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology, a national competition that recognizes the best and brightest high school students.
The pair brought home a $30,000 scholarship in the team category for their graph theory project, “Matching Preclusions for Augmented Cubes.” Their research presents an innovative way to measure the strength of a network in the event of link failure.
“I am very happy for our students,” Cheng said. “It is always good to see students being professional in their studies. Siemens is the premier competition in the country and I am proud that our students were able to compete successfully at this level.”
Both students attend Detroit Country Day School and each has a long list of math and science prizes and achievements from across the region.
This marks the first time a group from OU’s Summer Mathematics Institute has made it to competition at the regional and national levels.
The institute exposes exceptionally talented students to advanced undergraduate mathematical concepts in a creative environment. To learn more about the program, visit www.oakland.edu/mathematics/OUSMI/.
