OU alumna and Grammy nominee Regina Carter to perform at OU


Oakland University alumna and artist-in-residence jazz violinist Regina Carter (CAS ’85), will perform at Oakland University on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010 at 8 p.m. The concert will celebrate the anticipated release of her latest album, “Reverse Thread,” available in January 2010.

“Reverse Thread” is a collection of African folk melodies with a contemporary interpretation. Carter is well known as an innovative musician who travels the world performing as a jazz violinist.

Carter will perform as part of the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance Professional Artist Series. This series brings nationally and internationally recognized artists to campus to perform and interact with students.

Tickets for general admission to the concert are $25. A limited number of priority reserved seating ($50) and premium reserved seating ($75) are available. Premium reserved seating tickets include an Afterglow reception with Carter. Call the box office, (248) 370-3013, for information.

As a college student, Carter attended New England Conservatory of Music before transferring to Oakland. She studied classical and African American music and earned a bachelor’s degree in Performance from OU in 1985.

In 2007, she received a Distinguished Alumni Achievement award from Oakland University, and was named an artist-in-residence with OU’s College of Arts and Sciences. She has earned the acclaimed John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, received an International Achievement Award from Art Serve Michigan, and was selected as “Best Violinist” in the Jazz 2001 Readers’ Poll.

Carter’s Thursday OU performance will be followed by a Friday evening performance at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, premiering a piece written specifically for Carter by Billy Childs.
