Chinese literati art and music come to OU

Literati art is a form of Chinese art that expresses art as a way of life and personality. Literati tradition requires artists to practice a multi-disciplinary approach by being masters in poetry, calligraphy, carving and painting. A reception for the exhibition will include a lecture by OU Art and Art History Professor Shuishan Yu.

Two events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition. On Oct. 16, 2009 at 8 p.m. in Varner Recital Hall, Guqin Concert: Archaic Scent of the Plum Pavilion provides an introduction to Guqin music and culture. Guqin is one of four noble arts of the literati tradition.

Guest Lecturer Marshall Wu, retired senior curator of Asian Art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, will speak on the topic of literati painting on Oct. 17, 2009 from 2:30 – 4 p.m. in the OU Art Gallery. Immediately following Dr. Wu’s lecture, Visiting Artist Yu Zengshan will provide an art demonstration.
