"Burning Down the House" lecture on race, politics and the media set for Oct. 7
Social movement scholar and Stanford University professor Doug McAdam will offer his insight into race and religion in the lecture “Burning Down the House,” from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7 in the Oakland Center Banquet Room B.
As the director of Urban Studies at Stanford, McAdam researches the U.S. civil rights movement and specifically focuses on the arson of black churches. This talk will center on the media’s role in the context of lynchings, hate groups and the burning of more than 1,000 churches between 1996 and 2001.
McAdam is the author of many journal articles and books such as “Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency, 1930-1970,” and “Freedom Summer.”
This event is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the departments of political science, history, communication and journalism, sociology and anthropology, the Women and Gender Studies Program and the Honors College.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
