OU looking forward to getting students back in class after contract settlement with faculty

Rochester, Mich. – Oakland University and its union-represented faculty reached an agreement on a new three-year contract today. The faculty, represented by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), had been on strike since last Thursday.

As a result of marathon bargaining facilitated by Oakland County Circuit Judge Edward Sosnick, negotiators on both sides of the bargaining table were able to resolve a number of sticking points, including the topics of shared university governance and compensation.

“We are extremely pleased to have found common ground on the issues that had been standing in the way of an agreement,” said Virinder Moudgil, OU’s senior vice president and provost. “With a new contract in place, we can once again focus on doing the work that has made Oakland University the outstanding institution it is. Most importantly, we can look forward to getting students back to class, where they’ll benefit from the valuable academic programs we are committed to delivering.”

Terms of the new faculty contract won’t be available until the full AAUP membership votes to ratify the agreement.

Fall 2009 semester classes will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. Representatives of both the administration and the faculty are assuring students they will receive full instruction for all classes this semester.
