Chinese Literati Art and Music Come to OU

Beginning September 12, the Oakland University Art Gallery will be hosting the exhibition Writing an Image: Literati Art. Literati art is a form of Chinese art that expresses art as a way of life and personality. Literati tradition requires artists to practice a multi-disciplinary approach by being masters in poetry, calligraphy, carving and painting. More than 30 pieces have been chosen to be displayed in the exhibition. A reception for the exhibition will include a lecture on the pieces given by OU Art and Art History professor Shuishan Yu.

Two events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition. Guest lecturer Dr. Marshall Wu, retired senior curator of Asian Art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, will be speaking on the topic of literati painting.  mmediately following Dr. Wu’s lecture, visiting artist Yu Zengshan will be providing an art demonstration.

The second event will be Guqin Concert: Archaic Scent of Plum Pavilion. Guqin is one of four noble arts of the literati tradition. This concert will provide an introduction to guqin music and culture.
