Meadow Brook Writing Project offers summer seminar for area teachers

As part of its professional development opportunities for teachers, the Meadow Brook Writing Project is now accepting nominations and applications for the invitational summer institute to be held July 6-31 at Oakland University.

The MBWP is part of the National Writing Project, a network of more than 200 sites dedicated to improving writing, literacy and teaching in K-12 schools across the country. This partnership links directly with local schools such as Detroit Public Schools, Macomb County Schools, Oakland Community College and the Public School Academies of Oakland University.

Built on the philosophy that teachers are the key to improving education and that teachers develop best by interacting with fellow teachers, the institute provides a community for teachers to create and share innovative practices to bring back to the classroom.

The MBWP supports and encourages a wide variety of teaching techniques and does not subscribe to any set formulas, instead advocating the ideas that teachers of writing must write, that meaningful change happens over time and that knowledge comes from the interaction between writing theory and practice.

Participants will develop a demonstration project, practice and reflect on writing in both personal and professional modes, share in a reading inquiry group, promote conversation about writing, prepare for a leadership role to aid other teachers and develop the critical thinking skills to become a better teacher, theorist and writer.

Space is limited to 18 participants in order to encourage discussion and create lasting bonds. Teachers representing various grade levels, diverse backgrounds and non-language arts courses are welcome.
