School of Nursing conference to focus on career opportunities

Oakland University’s School of Nursing, presenting sponsor William Beaumont Hospitals and welcome reception sponsor St. John Health will host the third annual “Envision Conference, Nursing in the Future with Home & Community Based Care” on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at the Troy Marriott Hotel in Troy.

Presenters will discuss creative and futuristic opportunities for nurses, entrepreneurial solutions for practice, research, and education in home care nursing and palliative care. Poster presentation proposals also will be accepted for display.

The conference also is designed to promote interest in the wide range of nursing profession opportunities that will develop as a current shortage of nurses grows in coming years. Nurses, doctors, medical researchers and other health care professionals will learn more from entrepreneurs who own home care businesses and specialize in home and palliative care. Featured speakers will include:

· Keynote speaker Brendan McCormack, professor of nursing research and practice development at the Institute of Nursing at the University of Ulster in Ireland, whose research work focuses on gerontological nursing, person-centered nursing and practice development.

· Gwendolyn Franklin, director of the Office of Nursing at the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, who has 19 years experience in public health nursing and departmental oversight of nursing practice.

· Margaret Wolters with St. Mary’s Palliative Care & Hospice in Minnesota, an expert with 30 years of experience in hospice and palliative care, management and development.

· Doris Neumeyer of William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, who has been an infection control practitioner for more than18 years with responsibility for acute care, ambulatory care, home care and hospice care.
