OU offering summer course in advanced art therapy counseling techniques

Rochester, Mich. – Oakland University’s School of Education and Human Services (SEHS) will offer “Advanced Art Therapy for Counseling Professionals,” a hands-on seminar demonstrating visual strategies for providing services to family, group, couple and individual clients. The course is scheduled on Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturdays from June 11-13 and June 18-20 at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center in Birmingham.

Leading the seminar will be Sylvia Walworth, a board certified art therapist with more than 25 years of clinical experience, including private practice, staff training and community service programming. She is past president of the Michigan Counseling Association, Michigan Counseling Association of Marriage and Family Counselors, and the Michigan Association of Adult Development and Aging.

Participants will learn about the Kinetic-House-Tree-Person, an art therapy projective assessment tool and how it can be utilized. Steps and materials needed to create masks and shields with clients will be presented and applied. Multicultural strategies will be emphasized. Artistic skills are not required. Registration is $395 if enrolled for non-credit, continuing education units. There also is an option to earn graduate credit.
