Assistant Professor Zijuan Liu Studies Arsenic Toxicity

Arsenic is a particularly toxic element and arsenic exposure poses a significant health threat. Assistant Professor Zijuan Liu, of the Department of Biological Sciences, recently published Transport Pathways for Arsenic and Selenium: A Minireview (Environment International, Volume 35, Pages 512-515, 2009). She writes that "in this review we discuss the membrane proteins that transport arsenic and selenium into cells, from bacteria to humans, as well as some of the efflux proteins involved in detoxification." Liu just received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue her studies of arsenic uptake.
