Our Annual Side by Side Symposium

Make plans to join us for our annual Side by Side Symposium on Saturday, May 2nd at the Macomb Intermediate School District Educational Service Center.  The symposium will run from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM. This year’s theme is “Moving Writing Forward:  Practice, Assessment, Play.”

Our keynote event as well as the various breakout sessions will give participants an opportunity to look at best practices, effective assessment techniques, and the importance of enjoyment (intentionality) to a writer’s development.

Elementary teachers, for example, will want to experience breakout sessions on using picture books to teach author’s craft, creating animated poetry, and asking students to use their own experiences to write memoirs. Secondary and college teachers will want to attend presentations on creating student writing clubs, and promoting adolescent literacy.

There will also be general (K-12+) sessions on such issues as writing across the curriculum, public school and college teachers communicating better about preparing students for college writing, and the effect the National Writing Project model has had on improving writing skills across the country.

The registration fee for the event is $50, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch.  Most districts have some funds left for staff development.  For example, Chippewa Valley’s school district--Macomb County--will reimburse the registration fee for any teacher in the district who wants to attend the Side by Side Symposium.

To register for the event or for more information about workshops and sessions, visit the MBWP website. And please encourage your colleagues and curriculum administrators to attend this year's symposium with you. This event is open to any teacher or administrator who is interested in, or who has been charged with, improving student writing K-12+ and across the curriculum.
