Project S.A.F.E. Streets planned for the month of April
The Oakland University and Auburn Hills police departments are joining forces to keep local streets safe and enforce traffic regulations.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 9, 15 and 16, officers will monitor traffic in the “Traffic Enforcement Zone” to curb reckless driving habits.
Local drivers should expect to see more officers than usual at University Drive between Squirrel and Pontiac Roads and Squirrel Road between Cross Creek Parkway and Walton Boulevard. Advisory signs indicating a "Traffic Enforcement Zone" will be displayed as drivers enter the enforcement area.
While all traffic laws will be enforced, special attention will be given to those who speed, follow too close or fail to yield the right of way.
The ongoing program, titled Stop Accidents From Escalating (S.A.F.E. Streets), emphasizes crash reduction through the use of efficient traffic engineering, driver education and research-based traffic enforcement, according to the Project S.A.F.E. Streets website.
Last year, 31 crashes occurred within this area - 29 percent were caused by drivers unable to stop their vehicle before striking another object and 23 percent were caused by drivers failing to yield, according to the OUPD.
The Auburn Hills and Oakland University Police Departments are committed to providing a safe environment for those who live, work or travel through our community. To comment on Project S.A.F.E. Streets, call Auburn Hills Police Sergeant Jill McDonnell at (248) 364-6861 or Oakland University Police Sergeant Terry Ross at (248) 370-3331.
