OU partners to identify future scholarship recipients

OU’s School of Education and Human Services has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit (BBBSMD) to bring educational opportunities to young adults who are ready for college, and helping to find mentors for the children that participate in BBBSMD.

Oakland University's School of Education and Human Services (SEHS) is partnering with many key community organizations that can help identify future recipients of the SEHS Student Leader Success Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to recruit young leaders from urban communities with the qualities to become successful students at OU and ultimately educators and human resource professionals upon graduation.

The SEHS is helping Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit find mentors for its community, site and activity based programs and resources to support the children in these programs. There is an acute need for males to become involved because boys wait longer than girls for a mentor match. The commitment, of just a few hours a month depending on the program, produces remarkable outcomes for boys and girls. A recent 20-year study of more than 1,200 participants in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program demonstrated an 87 percent graduation rate from high school. Fifty-eight percent of these children went on to college or technical trade school as well.

Please join the SEHS and BBBSMD in responding to this call for mentoring support for the children of southeastern Michigan. Contact BBBSMD at (313) 309-0500, or send an email to info@bbbsmd.org. Let them know you are from Oakland University and you will be included in an upcoming event.
