World-renowned neurosurgeon to speak at OU

Dr. Ben Carson will speak at OU on Thursday, Feb. 5.

As part of the Student Life Lecture Board (SLLB) 2008-09 lecture series, OU will welcome Dr. Ben Carson to the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5.

Carson is a world-renowned neurosurgeon known for performing medical miracles such as successfully separating conjoined twins. He is also a motivational speaker and author of three best-selling books, including his autobiography. “Gifted Hands” was recently made into a movie and is scheduled to premiere in February.

“This individual is an inspiration for all ages,” said Jean Ann Miller, director of the Center for Student Activities and SLLB member. “He represents what Barack Obama represents — the idea that anything is possible.”

The son of a single mother, Carson overcame tremendous challenges during his youth, graduating with honors from Southwestern High School in Detroit. He later earned a degree in psychology from Yale University before moving on to medical school at the University of Michigan and developing a passion for neurosurgery. After graduating, Carson went to work at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and was appointed the hospital’s director of pediatric neurosurgery at 33 years old.

Carson espouses a philosophy of discipline, perseverance and self-empowerment. Throughout his career, he has used his talents to serve others and earn the admiration of people around the world.

In June 2008, President George W. Bush presented Carson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his outstanding leadership in the medical profession and valuable contributions to society.
