The All-University Fund Drive for Oakland University, United Way and Black United Fund is wrapping up for 2008. However, there’s still time for members of the university community to make a difference while making their contributions go farther. Participants can enjoy tax advantages, and donations of up to $5,000 received by Thursday, Dec. 18, will be matched by OU President Gary Russi at 50 cents on the dollar.
“We realize everyone is impacted in one way or another by these challenging economic times,” said Susan Davies Goepp, vice president for University Relations and executive director of the Oakland University Foundation. “However, every donation, regardless of its size, makes a difference when combined together. Our students are facing these same economic issues in their families, and now more than ever are depending on scholarships to make a college degree a reality.”
Those who file itemized deductions on their federal income tax return may be able to deduct contributions to OU, United Way and Black United Fund from their adjusted gross income.
In addition, Michigan residents can take a credit against their state income tax of 50 cents for each dollar of their gift to institutions of higher education, including Oakland University. There is a maximum tax credit of $100 for those filing single or $200 on a joint return. This credit comes directly off the tax bill, so it is even more valuable than a deduction from income, and the credit is available even for those who don’t itemize deductions.*
This year’s AUFD goal is $230,000 in combined contributions. Packets were mailed in October and included information about payroll deductions.
