Seniors in studio art program put their best on display

By Dave Groves, news editor

Eight students in OU’s studio art program will exhibit a body of work representing the culmination of their four years of study during “Beneath the Surface: BA in Studio Art Senior Thesis Fall Exhibition.”

The event, which runs Dec. 5-21 at the Oakland University Art Gallery (OUAG), features the work of Jason Avery, Jonathan Bowen, Anna Filipek, Jillian Nickel, Jessica Pfeiffer, Thomas Rowland, Vanessa Sales and Nancy Stover-Pontois.

On display will be mixed media pieces, paintings, drawings, installation work, photography and more. Students will present their work at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, and an opening reception is planned from 5-7 p.m. that evening.

“All the works are very interesting. They stretch the definition of what painting is or photography is, and in very interesting ways,” said Vagner Whitehead, an assistant professor of art and instructor of the senior thesis course. “There’s a good mix of what we traditionally conceive as art and what would be considered more contemporary work. The exhibit has a lot of depth.”

Admission to the exhibit and to all special events at the OUAG is free and open to the public. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. every day except Mondays, as well as during Meadow Brook Theatre performances. For more information, visit the OUAG Web site.
