Visitors to the Galleria at the Oakland County Office of Arts, Culture & Film office will have an opportunity to take in work by Oakland University students exploring what it means to be visual artists in 2008.
The "Eclectic Collection: Oakland University Student Art Exhibition,” will be on display in the Galleria, located at 2100 Pontiac Lake Road, Building 34 W, through Jan. 5.
Sally Schluter Tardella, a special instructor with the Department of Art and Art History at OU, served as the juror for the exhibit, which she hopes will become an annual event.
Featuring some sculpture and a variety of flat work, the exhibit highlights students’ explorations of both formal and conceptual approaches to artistic expression. Themes range from political and social issues to the creative process itself.
“We want to give the students the experience of not only exhibiting their work, but writing an artist’s statement explaining what they were looking to accomplish,” Schluter Tardella said. “I think it’s a really wide range of work, and some very high-quality work.”
The exhibit is supported by the Department of Art and Art History, the La Pittura student art group and the Oakland County Office of Arts, Culture & Film. Regular Galleria hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Galleria is open to the public and admission is free.
