With the major national election taking place Tuesday, Nov. 4, students are reminded to plan ahead in anticipation of long election day voting lines.
In addition to the presidential race, the ballot also includes candidates running for U.S. Senate, Congress, the Michigan House of Representatives, county government, judicial seats, state school, university and community college boards, plus two statewide ballot initiatives, and perhaps county and local proposals, depending on voting district.
Students are encouraged to visit the polls at times when they will not risk missing class. In Michigan, the polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
You must vote at your registered polling place. To find out where you should go to vote, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center Web site, which includes a tool you can use to look up your polling place.
Registered voters do not need to bring their voters card to the polls; however, a photo ID is requested. If you do not have a photo ID or you forget to bring it, you may still vote at your registered polling location; you will be simply be asked to sign an affidavit stating that you do not have a photo ID in your possession.
By Michigan law, you may not display election-related materials (including clothing, buttons and stickers) in the polling place or within 100 feet of an entrance to a polling place. If you go to the polls with a shirt, button or sticker bearing election-related images or slogans, you will be asked to cover or remove it.
