During the Go for the Gold program on Saturday, October 11, 2008 nearly 850 high school students and their parents attended academic and resource sessions, toured campus and mingled with OU faculty, staff and students. Five Alumni Admissions Ambassadors also shared how OU helped them get one step closer to their dream job during two resource sessions. They explained why they chose OU, activities they were involved in as undergraduates and relationships they formed with faculty -- all which helped them secure a “dream job” in their chosen professions.
The alumni panel included Jill Baran, CAS, ’98, front office manager for the Detroit Tigers; Stefen Welch, CAS ’05, director of membership and marketing at YMCA Metropolitan Detroit; Kim Schultz, SEHS ’07, middle school teacher; Adam Kochenderfer, CAS ’02, attorney at law; and Kaniqua Smothers, CAS ’04, donor relations and communications specialist at POH Regional Medical Center.
Parent Theresa Cochell, CAS '84, attended one of the alumni panel sessions with her son Dave, a high school senior. “I thought the panel did an outstanding job presenting solid information about how their OU experience has helped them land their dream job,” she said. Cochell signed up to be a part of the Alumni Admissions Ambassador Program after learning about the program on Saturday. Dave has many college options for the fall of 2009, but is leaning toward OU. “Dave was impressed with the message from the panel and how each of them took a different path to get them where they wanted to be.”
Later in the month Cochell, project manager for TechTeam Global, teamed up with Jennifer Rosebrock, senior admissions adviser, and Dawn Aubry, associate director of undergraduate admissions, at a college fair at Macomb Community College to talk with students and parents about her OU experience. Just like the alumni on the Go for the Gold panel, Cochell helped recruit prospective students to the university.
