President’s Colloquium to focus on election

Oakland University associate professors of political science David Dulio and Peter Trumbore will present “The Battle for Power: Issues, Politics and Strategy in the 2006 and 2008 Elections” at the President’s Colloquium on Monday, Oct. 27. The colloquium begins at noon in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms.

As the 2008 presidential election nears, questions abound as to how the candidates will approach the battle for the White House. Dulio and Trumbore will look back at the 2006 U.S. congressional election’s focus on Iraq, and ahead to November to discuss the role that issues, partisanship, campaign strategy and other dynamics had in 2006 and will have in the 2008 presidential election results.

They will discuss the findings of their recent research, which includes an examination of 400 television advertisements, produced by candidates in 62 of the most competitive races of the 2006 election. Dulio and Trumbore will share how what happened in 2006 can help us better understand the 2008 presidential race. They will speak to the strategies the candidates are employing and lead participants in an engaging, informative discussion of the presidential campaign.

Dulio is the author of five books and dozens of articles on campaigns and elections, political parties and campaign finance. He is also a frequent political commentator for Detroit-area media outlets. Trumbore has published more than a dozen articles on international conflict and resolution. His current research focuses on terrorism and counterterrorism.

A reception begins at 11:30 a.m. and the President’s Colloquium starts at noon. Admission is free and the event is open to the public, but seating is limited. To reserve a seat for the event, e-mail register@oakland.edu or call (248) 370-4908.
