Local communities welcome students and faculty back to school

When Oakland University students returned to campus this fall, local communities including Rochester, Auburn Hills, Oakland Township and Rochester Hills welcomed students with open arms.

Mayors or representatives from each of these communities presented official resolutions recognizing Oakland University’s Welcome Week to President Gary Russi in front of a crowd of nearly 1,500 during New Student Convocation on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson also signed a proclamation.

“Oakland University’s location, in the heart of these wonderful communities, enhances the academic and social experiences for our students,” said Russi. “We are honored that they are officially recognizing OU’s Welcome Week.”

The Rochester Regional Chamber of Commerce, with assistance from its team of ambassadors, distributed 1,400 welcome bags, filled with information and promotional items from local businesses during university housing check-in.

“We appreciate our partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and its role in making Welcome Week successful,” said Lionel Maten, director of university housing. “I would also like to thank each of the business owners or managers who contributed items for our students or volunteered during Welcome Week.”

Area businesses are also displaying posters welcoming OU students back to campus. Many of these same businesses offer students, faculty staff and alumni discounts and special offers through the OU GO Card.

Students, faculty and staff can pick up GO Cards at locations throughout campus, including:\
  • OC Welcome Center
  • Financial Aid Office
  • Center for Student Activities
  • Barnes & Noble at OU Bookstore
  • Kresge Library
  • Recreation Center
  • Alumni Office, John Dodge House
  • Residence Hall Office
New GO Card participants are added throughout the year. A complete list can be found on the GO Card Web site.
