Low brass student news

Jennifer Shinska, trombone performance and music education major, was a guest performer with the University of Michigan Jazz Trombone Ensemble on Labor Day at the Detroit Jazz Festival.  She was invited earlier this summer by their director and professor of jazz trombone, Dennis Wilson, to be one of eight trombonists to perform.  Steve Turre, trombonist of the Saturday Live Band and solo recording artist will appear as soloist with the group.

OU alum Robert Benton (BM euphonium performance '07) recently returned from the Jeju International Brass Competition in Jeju, South Korea.  He placed as one of five finalist who performed a concerto with orchestral accompaniment.  The competition, which took place over nine days in three rounds started from a pool of over 40 euphoniumists from around the world.  Robert was one of two American to compete against two Japanese and one French performer in the final round.  This past March, Robert was the brass division winner of the Michigan State University Concerto Competition, where he is on a full scholarship to complete a Masters in Brass Performance.
