In an effort to add to a healthier Oakland University environment, effective with the start of fall semester, the Department of Campus Recreation has expanded the no-smoking zone outside of the main entrance to the Recreation Center. The new no-smoking zone has been enlarged to encompass the covered sidewalks to the north, south and west of the main entrance. Appropriate signage has been posted on exterior pillars of the building and smoking urns have been located at each location as well.
“Over the 10 years of our operation we have received consistent complaints from students and members who have to walk through a haze of smoke right outside our front doors either on their way in to work-out or when they leave after using the variety of services in the facility,” said Greg Jordan, director of Campus Recreation. “I can’t think of a more unpleasant way to start or finish participation in our building that is designed to promote healthy lifestyles.”
After consulting with students, staff and offices within the university, Jordan indicated that several institutions in Michigan have adopted smoking zones away from entrances to buildings.
“With OU’s recent partnership with Beaumont Hospitals to establish a medical school, what better way to contribute to developing a healthy campus,” Jordan said. “We’re also beginning our third year of Shape Up OU, the employee wellness program. With 175 faculty and staff participants this year, creating a comfortable environment is critical to the success of each individual.”
