First-year students gathered in the Oakland Center on Tuesday, Sept. 2 to attend Jump Start, a popular event hosted by the Center for Student Activities. Part of Welcome Week, the Jump Start program is designed to help incoming freshmen make a successful transition from high school to college.
“Jump Start is about helping students get connected to the university and each other,” said Amy Ring, a student leader.
The event was kicked off by a series of ice-breaker activities allowing students to share experiences and develop a rapport with one another.
“I had no idea what to expect, but it turned out good,” said freshman Michael Boruszewski, a campus resident planning to study engineering. “I'll have to see how all my classes go this semester.”
Several OU faculty members were on hand to discuss strategies for college success and answer questions from the audience. They advised students to get to know their professors, find mentors, pursue internships and seek out campus resources.
“A degree is not the same as an education,” said Pamela Mitzelfeld, a special lecturer and member of OU’s recently unveiled writing program. “You're putting money into a degree...make sure you put the time in and get an education.”
Other faculty expressed similar sentiments, urging students to buckle down and commit to the college experience.
“Be your own advocate,” said David Dulio, an associate professor of political science. “Take advantage of the resources available and take ownership of your education.”
