International Welcome Reception planned for Sept. 5

The Oakland University community is invited to the International Welcome Reception on Friday, Sept. 5 from 5-7 p.m. in the Oakland Center Gold Rooms. The event, part of the OU Welcome Week activities, will connect the campus community with OU’s new, current and former international students, as well as celebrate the diversity on campus.

The event will feature international food and music by the Southpaw Isle Trio.

"Being an international student once myself, I know how important it is to meet people who can help you with your questions or direct you to someone who can help you when you first arrive in another country. Developing personal and professional relationships that can assist you when you need it promote a successful stay in another country.  It is nice to know that there are people who want to help you succeed and provide resources and activities for your growth and positive experience. Then it is up to you to make the most out of your experience wherever you are," said Petra Knoche, assistant director of the International Students and Scholars Office.

OU President Gary Russi will welcome students and scholars to campus and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Virinder Moudgil will make opening remarks and comments about the importance of international education, research and globalization. Also during the reception, deans, assistant deans, vice presidents and other guests will be recognized.

Knoche said many international students come to OU and do not know anyone on campus or have any family or friends in Michigan. The International Welcome reception will connect the international students to the current and former international students and the domestic campus community.

After the reception, participants are invited to continue their conversation at the Student Program Board and Student Activities Funding Board Third Annual Carnival from 7 p.m. to midnight in the P11 parking lot and at the Sigma Pi 14th Annual Pig Roast from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Upper Fields.

The International Welcome reception is sponsored by OU Alumni Association, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Center for International Programs, Center for Student Activities, Center for Multicultural Initiatives, Graduate Admissions, Honors College, International Advisory Committee, International Allies Organization, International Education, International Students and Scholars Office, Office of Admissions and Orientation, OU Student Congress and University Housing. Department of Sociology and Anthropology,
