Welcome Week begins Sept. 2

The first week of classes is filled with buying course material, searching for a parking spot and learning what professors will expect, but it’s also filled with picnics, carnivals, ice cream socials and outdoor movies as part of Welcome Week 2008. Welcome events begin Aug. 28 and continue through Sept. 12, with the official Welcome Week starting Sept. 2.

Actors ‘N’ Techies, the student production organization, will present “The World Goes ‘Round,” from Thursday, Aug. 28 through Sunday, Sept. 7. Performances are at 8 p.m. in the Varner Studio Theatre Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $6 for students and seniors and $10 for adults.

Residence halls check-in begins Saturday, Aug. 30 for students who plan to live on campus. A number of events are planned for those who will be moving in.

First-year students who signed up for Jump Start will learn more about campus life on Tuesday, Sept. 2, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms. New students and their parents are invited to New Student Convocation and Involvement Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 3-5 p.m. in the Recreation and Athletics Center.

The annual walk to Meadow Brook Hall will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 9 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. from the Hamlin Courtyard.

Student Affairs will host its annual ice cream social on Thursday, Sept. 2, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-6:30 p.m. outside between North and South Foundation halls. The rain site is the Oakland Center.

Students can learn more about getting involved in student and Greek organizations during the GrizzFest: Student and Greek Organizations Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside between North and South Foundation halls.

Students are also encouraged to cheer on the Golden Grizzlies during a number of sporting events, including women’s soccer, men’s soccer and a pep rally.

Welcome Week wraps up with a Student Program Board Mainstage Concert featuring R&B artist Raheem DeVaughn on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Shotwell-Gustafson Pavilion on the east side of campus. The event is free for OU students, $10 for guests. One guest is allowed per OU student. Tickets are available at the CSA Service Window, located at 49 Oakland Center.
